What is hydro pneumothorax?

Hydro pneumothorax is a medical condition in which there is a collection of both air and fluid (usually serous fluid) in the pleural cavity, the space between the lungs and chest wall. It is a rare condition that typically occurs secondary to underlying lung or heart disease, trauma, or surgery. Hydro pneumothorax can result in breathing difficulties, chest pain, and hypoxia (oxygen deprivation). The diagnosis is typically made through imaging studies, such as chest x-rays or CT scans. Treatment may involve draining the fluid and/or air from the pleural space, as well as addressing the underlying cause of the condition. Without treatment, hydro pneumothorax can lead to severe respiratory distress, lung collapse, and even death.
